International Mentorship & Bursary 2012
Mentor: Kirsten Dehlholm of Hotel Pro Forma
Una McKevitt is a theatre practitioner interested in making theatre from everyday life. The ambition and focus of her work is to derive an original dramatic text from a documentary practice and abstract personal histories and social realities through performance and design to create theatre that is both artful and innovative.
Una’s project for Pan Pan’s International Mentorship & Bursary programme 2012 was ‘Long Day’s Journey into Night’ by Eugene O’Neill: “My interest in Long Day’s Journey Into Night started two years ago when I read the Introduction to the edition I had at home and learnt that everything in the play is true or at least autobiographical; that first reading of the play I was thinking, here is a documentary text – a very, very long one – and that maybe, unlike most plays I’ve read, I might find a way into it. My first instinct was to react against the realist form and expression of the play and to try and shape it to my own which is what I’ve been exploring the last few months with Kirsten.” The last development phase of the project took place in January 2015.
